The Bergen Arches Feasibility Study, led by the Jersey City Department of Infrastructure in collaboration with, Supermass Studio, NHDM, and Arup Engineering, evaluated how the corridor could be reimagined as both a shared-use greenway and a future transit corridor, analyzing these possibilities in parallel rather than as competing alternatives. The study examined existing conditions, structural and geotechnical constraints, access points, and connections to surrounding neighborhoods and regional trail networks. It also developed conceptual designs, cost estimates, and implementation strategies, while incorporating public feedback and technical analysis to understand how the Arches could best support mobility, recreation, and community connectivity.

A central focus of the study was balancing new public use with preservation of the corridor’s unique natural environment. Over decades of disuse, the Arches have evolved into an “urban forest,” and the study emphasizes minimizing ecological disruption while introducing safe, accessible infrastructure. By exploring how greenway and transit uses could coexist within this space, the study positions the Bergen Arches as a rare opportunity to create a multi-functional corridor that supports transportation, open space, and environmental stewardship simultaneously.
